The old name of Tianzi Mountain is Qingyan Mountain, and named due to that Xiang Dakun, Ancient Tujia Leader, led the local peasants to uprise and self-proclaimed “Emperor”, and it is one of four scenic spots in Wulingyuan. Its east is from Tianzi Pavilion, its west is to Jiangjun Rock, its south is connected with Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, stretching long and unbroken and coiling about 40km, with a total area of about 100km2, the altitude of the highest point of Tianzi Peak is 1262.5m, and its minimum altitude is 534m. It was named as Tianzi Mountain due to that Xiang Dakun, Tujia Leader of Song Dynasty to lead the local peasants uprising here and self-proclaiming “Emperor”, and died here later, so naming Tianzi Mountain, even with good name of “Peak Forest King”.
Annual average temperature of Tianzi Mountain is 12℃, annual rainfall is 1800 mm, frost-free period is 240 days, ice period is 60~80 days, and it is of the mesa landform type. It can be divided into two layers in geology, the upper layer above 900m in elevation is of the Permian argillaceous limestone. The lower layer below 900m is of the Devonian original sandstone and quartz sandstone, and distributed in the level extending like. Since the sandstone grows in vertical joint and the long-term exogenic force is used, so appear the peculiar landform of the gorge on both sides’ cliff and plate rock peak.
